What Is a GFCI Outlet and How It Works?
A GFCI is a special type of electrical outlet that protects you from electric shock. It works by monitoring the flow of electricity through a circuit. If it detects a difference in the current between the hot and neutral wires, it quickly cuts off the power.
This usually means electricity is escaping the circuit, possibly through water or a person, which can be extremely dangerous. The GFCI outlet reacts in a fraction of a second to stop the flow of electricity before harm can occur.
These outlets are easy to spot because they include “Test” and “Reset” buttons. You can press the test button to confirm the outlet is working properly and reset it after a trip.
GFCI outlets are essential for improving electrical safety in your home, especially in areas where moisture is present.
Where GFCI Outlets Are Required in a Home
GFCI outlets are required by the National Electrical Code (NEC) in any area of the home where water and electricity may come into contact. This requirement is designed to reduce the risk of electric shock and improve overall home safety.
GFCI outlets should be installed

Bathrooms
Any outlet near a sink, shower, or bathtub should be GFCI protected. It’s one of the most important places to prevent shock.

Kitchens
Outlets near your sink or countertop appliances like blenders, toasters, or coffee makers need GFCI protection. Water and cooking don’t always mix, and these outlets help keep things safe.

Laundry rooms
Washing machines use both water and electricity, so having GFCI protection here just makes sense.

Garages and basements
These spaces can get damp, especially in older or unfinished areas. GFCI outlets are essential in keeping your tools and equipment safe.

Outdoor areas
Any outlet outside whether it’s on your porch, deck, or near your garden lights should have GFCI protection to handle the weather and moisture.

Utility rooms and crawlspaces
If you have outlets near a sump pump, water heater, or anywhere that tends to be damp, adding GFCIs is a smart move.
If you’re not sure your home has the right protection in the right places, contact Janusz Electric (978) 866-6961 so we can take a look and help you upgrade. It’s not just about code, it’s about keeping you and your family safe.
Benefits of GFCI Outlet Installation
GFCI outlets do more than just meet code requirements. They play a big role in making your home safer and your electrical system more reliable. If you’re thinking about upgrading or adding GFCI outlets, here are some key benefits to keep in mind.
Helps prevent electric shock
GFCI outlets are designed to shut off power instantly when they detect a problem. This quick response helps protect you and your family from electrical shock, especially in areas where water is present.
Protects your appliances and devices
These outlets help prevent electrical imbalances that can damage your electronics. That includes everything from small kitchen gadgets to your phone chargers and bathroom tools.
Reduces the risk of electrical fires
By shutting off power during abnormal current flow, GFCI outlets help stop overheating and reduce fire hazards.
Keeps your home up to code
If you plan to sell your home or start a renovation, GFCI outlets are typically required in certain areas. Installing them now means fewer surprises later on.

The lights in my house started flickering so I called Liberty Electric power Company. They came out and checked the lines from the telephone pole to my house and they said I had an internal problem with my current electrical box which was only rated at 50 amps and it had been installed about 60 years ago. So they immediately turned off my power and would not turn it back on until I had it replaced. So I called Janusz Electric and spoke with Mitch. He was great he came out to my house within the hour, we made a deal and he started immediately with getting me some temporary power until they could come back the next morning to replace my panel and upgrade to a 200 amp. He had three guys there and they worked all day until they got the panel fixed and then he got the inspector out and got it approved so I was up and running . Everything came out great looks perfect and I'm very happy with my new service. The pricing was fair and they were very professional. THANKS MitchPosted on Google![]()

I had a wonderful experience with Janusz electrical. I had reached out on a Thursday or Friday and was able to get an appointment scheduled for the following Tuesday. It wasn't an emergency of any kind but we couldn't get some lights on our outdoor posts working. Mitch was able to determine it was just a bad switch on the outlet (I was thinking it was something significantly worse), was able to swap it out quickly and have us back up and running in no time. He was extremely professional, kind and the pricing was very fair. I would highly recommend Janusz Electric.Posted on Google![]()

Janusz did great work on a handful of move-in items I needed. Owen and Gabe showed up promptly and got right to work, coordinating tasks so they could work smoothly and efficiently. As they went they were communicative and open to questions and input I had about exactly how I wanted certain things done. The price was reasonable and fair and matched their initial estimate very closely. Highly recommended.Posted on Google![]()
